How to analyze and estimate which reddit post will go viral

I noticed that, if a reddit post achieved a certain dynamic, then suddenly more and more users will upvote that post (perhaps even without reading it). On the other hand, it might also happen that the same post goes completely unnotified if it has like only one upvote for a long time.

Example:

• The Ashley Madison thread had like 4000 upvotes in the Tech subreddit

• However, it only had one upvote when posted on the Programming subreddit

1. Can someone explain if there is a formula that relates to this ?

2. I would also be interested to see a time/upvote diagram on such post.

There is also the opposite:

• Posted a link about the Minecraft founder on programming - it went viral immediately until they removed it as it was a slightly out of topic.

• Then I posted it on Technology , where it went completely unnotified.
